I looked at your picture
and heard you laugh too hard
The dirty joke I told was even funnier
because mom walked into the room
as I pounced on the punch line
then turned red under her scowl
We were still immortal that sapphire summer
We dreamed bold
Fearless heroes of our invented adventures
we rode our bikes through ticker tape parades
to the corner grocery store for sodas
And after dark
lying in the grass we talked about girls
and searched for the end of the universe
behind the stars
until that day you awoke from our sapphire dream
Confused
too young to shave but sick as an old man
you lost your grip
and let go our immortality
too soon
